Why I prefer McAfee to McDonalds

One of the most notorious people in the E2.0 space is Andrew McAfee. Actually he is rather a household name in IT tout court as he is member of the Ivy League for technology geeks: he ranks #38 in the list of 100 most influential people in IT. You can read more on "Enterprise Andy" here.

Professor McAfee was the first to coin the term "Enterprise 2.0" back in 2006. Compulsory reading for all new socialism aficionados is his "the dawn of emergent collaboration" which is available on his site. Anyway, to cut a long story very short but not that short that I'm limited to 140 characters, the first chapter of his long-awaited book is now freely available on http://is.gd/159xK (how social is that!)

I look forward to reading it - by the way, I treated myself to some more (junk)food for thought on E2.0. Groundswell, Enterprise 2.0 implementation (which looks rather technical at first sight) and some other stuff suggested by Amazon's clever recommendations engine. All references can be found on my bookshelf.

Enterprise 2.0 is closer than you think

Monkey note of the week : I found some good material on Andrew's blog on collaboration and web 2.0 stuff. The article demonstrates how easy it is to create your own collaboration platform nowadays. It will give you some pratical guidelines on how the cited company (read : this could happen to me) can fully live the web2.0 philosophy by leveraging on their current intranet platform :

Doing some fieldwork on how to fuel participation and brand engagement by means of the Intranet, I stumbled upon some food for thought when reading Andrew McAfee's blog on Enterprise 2.0. If you are not familiar with the web 2.0-like stuff, I'd say go and wiki yourself but there is big fuss in blog-blog land as we speak : Wikipedia decided to remove the entry on Enterprise 2.0 from its dictionary (also see above blog)

Collaboration, 2.0 and here comes one that you can use on the next "impress your boss with an acronym" day : McAfee's SLATES ecosystem for the next gen employees portal :

Mash it all up and you have a collaborative intranet.
A youtubeslashgoogleslashmessengerslashlinkedin communications channel to be used in times of change : a platform that routs intelligent data and content, supports interaction between the users and fuels networking between company communities.

Why don't give it a try? It is a great marketing channel... Visibility is high and opportunities (read business benefits) are virtually un-explored.
So what exactly refrains companies from pimping up the net and equip their employees with these collaboration tools?
The good one, the bad one and the ugly one of the IT prairie : Security, Information Architecture and governance.

Is their really a business case for 2.0 apps in a business-like habitat and what's the true killer app?
